Kitchen counters to match your budget and style

Kitchen counters are one the best upgrades you can make to your kitchen. Arguably the hardest working surface in your kitchen, the counters are important in everything from prep to serving.

Standard kitchen counters usually measure 25″ deep from the backsplash or wall area behind the cabinet/counter area and 1-1/2″ thick. This dimension is common because most base cabinets are 24″ deep so going with 25″ allows for 1″ of overhang on the front of the cabinet. Kitchen counters are 1-1/2″ thick because most base cabinets are 34-1/2″ tall. Adding a 1-1/2″ thick counter top finishes out at the industry standard height of 36″ off the finished floor.

Standard kitchen counters can be found in different thicknesses. Most laminate counter tops are 1-1/2″ thick. Same with solid surface or Corian countertops – these kitchen counters are usually 1-1/2″ thick.

Stone kitchen counters (Granite, Quartz, Marble, Soapstone, Quartzite) can be found in 2cm (~5/8″ thick) or 3cm (~1-1/4″ thick). We can also miter or laminate the edges of stone counters to create any thickness you desire for your kitchen.

Wood kitchen counters also come in a variety of thicknesses from 3/4″ to 3″ or more. The most common thickness for wood is around 1-1/2″ or 2″. You can explore some popular countertops colors and trends below or use our visualizer to see your space with new countertops and backsplash.

Types of Kitchen Counters

Thompson Price has wide variety of kitchen counters available to see in our design center. We carry all types of counters including laminate, solid surface, granite, marble, quartzite, stone, wood and glass. Take a look below at each type of kitchen counter material and see which fits you best.

Quartz Kitchen Counters

The most popular countertop choice right now, quartz countertops have taken over the segment. Featuring all of the benefits of natural stone without all of the drawbacks, quartz countertops are probably the most durable and versatile countertops on the market.

Quartz countertops are made up of 93% mined quartz crystals, one of nature’s hardest materials. The other 7% is polyester resin and pigments which produce an engineered stone without the maintenance required of natural stone. Engineered quartz is non-porous and does not require sealing. Quartz countertops withstand typical wear and tear beautifully.

Quartz kitchen counters are usually 3cm thick (~1-1/4″). Some quartz products are manufactured in 2cm thickness (~3/4″ thick). You can pay extra to either miter or laminate the edges of your quartz countertops to make them look extra thick. Laminating is basically building up the top thickness and gluing two pieces together at the edges to make it twice as thick. Mitering the edges is where we cut the edge at 45 degrees and then seam the edges together. This allows us to make the edge whatever height required.

You can see a wide selection of quartz surfaces in our showroom where we feature the following quartz products:
