Quartz Kitchen Counters

Quartz countertops are the most popular kitchen counter surface right now. Featuring all of the benefits of natural stone without all of the drawbacks, quartz countertops are probably the most durable and versatile countertops on the market.

Quartz countertops are made up of 93% mined quartz crystals, one of nature’s hardest materials. The other 7% is polyester resin and pigments which produce an engineered stone without the maintenance required of natural stone. Engineered quartz is non-porous and does not require sealing. Quartz countertops withstand typical wear and tear beautifully.

Quartz kitchen counters are usually 3cm thick (~1-1/4″). Some quartz products are manufactured in 2cm thickness (~3/4″ thick). We have several standard edge treatment options we can apply to the finished edges of your quartz countertops.

You can also pay extra to either miter or laminate the edges of your quartz countertops to make them look extra thick. Laminating is basically building up the top thickness and gluing two pieces together at the edges to make it twice as thick. Mitering the edges is where we cut the edge at 45 degrees and then seam the edges together. This allows us to make the edge whatever height required.

Most quartz products are available in two slab sizes: Regular (120″ x 55″) and jumbo (128″x63″). Daltile ONE Quartz even offers some slabs up to 136″x79″. Your kitchen layout will be laid out to use the least amount of slabs. However, there will be seams where individual pieces meet. The best fabricators will have no problem making the seams in your kitchen counters disappear.

You can see a wide selection of quartz surfaces in our showroom where we feature the following quartz products:

Stone Kitchen Counters

When we use the term ‘Stone’ relating to countertops, we’re referring to all the natural stone products that occur naturally in nature. This includes granite, quartzite, marble and soapstone. These surfaces are created beneath the surface of the earth from years of high pressure and heat. The stone is then quarried or extracted from the earth, cut into smaller flat pieces called slabs and then sent to fabricators to cut to your desired size and shape.

Natural stone counters come in two common thicknesses – 2cm (3/4″) or 3cm (1-1/4″). Stone is fabricated the same was quartz is fabricated. It’s cut with waterjets and the edges have different edge treatments applied. Due to the limitation of the slab size, you may end up with seams in your granite tops but a good fabricator will have no problem making these seams almost invisible.

Natural stone is still a great surface for kitchen counters due to its strength and resistance to scratches and heat. However, natural stone does require a little more care than engineered quartz. For example, natural stone is porous so it does require sealing the surface. This is usually done at the time of installation but the homeowner will need to reseal the surface every few years. It’s not a difficult process but it is required to keep your stone surfaces looking their best.

Wood Kitchen Counters

Nothing adds warmth to a design like the elegant beauty of natural hardwood. Trends come and go, but wood’s beauty is ageless. High-end designers love to utilize wood for its warm and welcoming appearance and often it’s the focal point of the entire kitchen design.

Wood is 100% renewable, organic, and climate smart. Science has proven that wood countertops are perfectly safe in the kitchen. Multiple university studies have concluded that wood contains certain properties that are proven to be very effective at destroying more than 98% of common food-borne bacteria. In fact, wood is more food-prep-safe than granite, marble, quartz, or stainless steel. Why? Because a wooden surface is actively anti-bacterial – but this is only true if the correct wood finish is chosen.

Wood kitchen counters also come in a variety of thicknesses from 3/4″ to 3″ or more. The most common thickness for wood is around 1-1/2″ or 2″. Available in many wood specials, thicknesses and construction methods, wood makes an excellent choice for your kitchen countertops.
