Basement Remodel O’Fallon MO: Turning an Empty Basement into the Ultimate Entertainment Retreat
When homeowners invest in building their dream home, they usually envision every detail falling perfectly into place. However, sometimes the standard builder plans don’t quite match the homeowner’s vision. That’s exactly how this basement remodel in O’Fallon MO began.

Shortly after their new home was constructed, the homeowners approached their builder about finishing the basement. Unfortunately, the builder would only complete the space according to the original predesigned basement layout that came with the home. No changes. No customization. No flexibility.
That didn’t sit quite right.
After all, this was likely the last home the homeowners planned to build, and they wanted the basement finished exactly the way they imagined. So instead of settling for a cookie-cutter layout, they reached out to the design and remodeling experts at Thompson Price Kitchens, Baths & Home to create a custom basement finish in O’Fallon, Missouri tailored to their lifestyle.
What followed was a fun, creative, and slightly ambitious basement transformation—one that perfectly balanced entertaining, relaxation, hobbies, and practical storage.

Designing a Basement Built for Entertaining
From the very first conversation, one thing was clear: this O’Fallon basement remodel needed to be built for entertaining.
At the top of the wish list sat a fully functional basement bar. Not just a simple beverage station, but a true gathering space where friends and family could pull up a chair, share a cocktail, and spend an evening catching up.
Naturally, the bar needed a few supporting players. The homeowners wanted:
- A large island-style bar for seating and conversation
- Appliances for heating and preparing snacks
- A full-size refrigerator for drinks and entertaining essentials
- A layout that connected seamlessly to the lounge area
Just a few steps away from the bar, the homeowners had already purchased a large flat panel television for the living area. Comfortable seating, a relaxed lounging space, and easy access to the bar meant the basement would quickly become the go-to gathering spot during game nights, movie nights, or casual weekends with friends.
And of course, there was one more detail that absolutely had to be planned for…
The Pinball Machines
Yes—plural.
The homeowner owns a pinball machine, and if you know anything about collectors, you know these machines have a funny habit of multiplying over time. Because of that, we designed a dedicated space that could comfortably accommodate multiple machines without crowding the entertainment area.
After all, nobody wants a cramped pinball tournament.
Relaxation Meets Wellness: Adding a Sauna
While entertaining was a major goal, the homeowners also wanted the basement to serve as a personal wellness retreat.
High on the priority list was a home sauna installation.
Integrating a sauna into a basement remodel in O’Fallon MO requires careful planning. The electrical service must be sized correctly, ventilation must be considered, and the design must make the sauna feel like a natural part of the home rather than an afterthought.
Our team coordinated with licensed electricians to ensure the correct power supply was routed to the sauna unit. We also designed the surrounding space so the sauna blended beautifully into the overall basement design.
To complement the sauna, the homeowners also requested a full basement bathroom nearby. This space allows guests to clean up after workouts, relax after a sauna session, or simply enjoy the convenience of a private bathroom on the lower level.
A Craft Room with Serious Storage
The homeowners also had another creative request: a dedicated crafting room.
This wasn’t just a small desk tucked into a corner. Instead, the goal was to create a full crafting studio—roughly the size of a small bedroom—complete with:
- Extensive material and supply storage
- A large crafting and wrapping table
- Closet space for organizing supplies
Easy access to a utility sink in the unfinished area
For anyone who enjoys crafting, wrapping gifts, or working on creative projects, having a dedicated space like this makes a huge difference. It keeps supplies organized, protects the rest of the home from creative chaos, and encourages hobbies to flourish.
Planning Storage the Smart Way
Even the most beautiful finished basement needs practical storage. That’s why the homeowners also asked us to incorporate organized storage racks in the unfinished portion of the basement.
These racks provide a home for seasonal items, tools, and household storage while keeping the finished basement areas clutter-free.
Because let’s face it—no matter how organized we try to be, stuff always finds its way into the basement.
Step One: The Thompson Price 4P Process – Perfect Plan
Every successful remodeling project begins with a solid plan. At Thompson Price, that’s the first step in our 4P Remodeling Process: Perfect Plan, Perfect Products, Perfect Price, Perfect Project.
For this basement remodel in O’Fallon Missouri, our design team began by carefully measuring the existing space and documenting every structural and mechanical detail.
However, there was one small challenge.
The basement had already become the temporary storage space for belongings from the homeowner’s previous (and much larger) home. That meant our design team had to navigate around stacks of boxes and furniture while gathering measurements.
Fortunately, our team is always up for a challenge.
Once the measurements were complete, we returned to the design center and developed two completely different layout options.
Exploring Multiple Basement Layout Options
The first design option explored a bold idea: removing a structural support beam to create a larger open entertainment space for the bar and island.
This layout also included a smaller bathroom and a larger crafting room.
Meanwhile, the second layout preserved the beam but adjusted the bar layout and entertainment area differently.
The pinball machine area went through several iterations as well. After reviewing both options, the homeowners ultimately chose a hybrid design that blended the best elements from both plans.
That’s the beauty of custom basement remodeling—you don’t have to settle for “good enough.”
Selecting Products and Materials
Once the layout was finalized, we moved on to the next stage of the 4P Process: Perfect Products.
At Thompson Price, we always present homeowners with multiple product options for each portion of the project. This approach gives clients flexibility and helps them decide where to invest more and where to save.
In this project, the homeowners debated between custom cabinetry and semi-custom cabinets for the basement bar.
While custom cabinets offered additional flexibility, they came at about a 25% higher cost. Ultimately, the homeowners decided to invest those funds into other upgrades such as the sauna and premium countertops.
For the bar cabinetry, they selected a timeless white shaker cabinet door style, a design that remains popular in both kitchens and basement bars thanks to its clean lines and versatile appeal.
Interestingly enough, the new semi-custom cabinets we installed were higher quality than the builder-grade kitchen cabinets upstairs.
Appliances for the Basement Bar
To ensure the bar could truly function as an entertaining hub, we installed several appliances, including:
- A KitchenAid microwave drawer for discreet snack heating
- A full-size refrigerator for drinks and food
- A dishwasher for easy cleanup
With these features in place, the bar was fully equipped for everything from casual family movie nights to lively weekend gatherings.
Overcoming Basement Remodeling Challenges
To keep everything on track for this project, we followed our kitchen remodel project plan. However, this basement remodel in O’Fallon MO comes with a few surprises, and this project was no exception.
Material Access
Although the home featured a walkout basement, transporting materials still required moving supplies from the front of the house, downhill, and around the property. This added time and complexity to the construction process.
HVAC Challenges
Even though the home had just been built, the basement surprisingly had no heating or cooling system installed.
Our HVAC team designed and installed a system that included:
- New supply vents
- Cold air returns
- Bathroom ventilation
- A separate HVAC zone for the basement
Now the space stays comfortable year-round.
Plumbing Relocation
While the builder had placed rough plumbing for a bathroom in the floor, the original bar sink location sat awkwardly near the bottom of the stairs.
To create a larger and more functional bar layout, we cut and trenched the concrete slab to relocate the sink plumbing to the exterior wall.
We also ran a concrete trench to the island to provide electrical outlets for the bar seating area.
The Basement Remodel Timeline
Thanks to careful planning and coordination, the project moved efficiently from start to finish.
Week 1: Project kickoff, layout marking, and framing
Week 2: Concrete removal and rough plumbing/electrical work
Week 3: HVAC installation and rough inspections
Week 4: Drywall installation and screw inspection
Week 5: First coat of paint and flooring installation begins
Week 6: Flooring completion
Week 7: Cabinet installation and countertop templating
Week 8: Shower installation
Week 9: Doors and trim installation
Week 10: Countertops, appliance installation, and final mechanical work
Week 11: Final painting
Week 12: Punch list, cleaning, final inspections, and project completion
In just under three months, the basement transformed from unfinished space into a beautifully designed entertainment and wellness retreat.
Finishing Details that Elevate the Space
This O’Fallon basement renovation included nearly 2,500 square feet of finished drywall, along with extensive trim and paint work.
Additional features included:
- Solid-core two-panel arch doors to match the upstairs
- Large base molding for a polished finish
- Quartz countertops for durability and style
- A low-maintenance custom Onyx surround kit solid-panel shower system
- A custom sliding glass shower door
- Medium-tone luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout the basement
During construction, we also discovered a metal support beam that extended slightly beyond the recessed foundation pocket. Rather than covering it with drywall and risking a visible bump, we wrapped the beam in wood and stained it to match the flooring.
The result? A design feature that looks intentional instead of awkward.
