So naturally, when it came time to remodel the master bathroom, the goal wasn’t simply to update finishes. Instead, we wanted the new space to feel like it truly belonged with the rest of the home. Warm. Relaxing. Comfortable. Timeless. Functional.
At the same time, this project marked the beginning of a brand-new chapter for the homeowners themselves. Two lives were coming together, and like many couples starting fresh, they decided to jump straight into a remodeling project together. Talk about a crash course in teamwork.
Fortunately, they were incredible to work with, and together we transformed an outdated early-1990s bathroom into a warm luxury retreat that feels dramatically larger, brighter, and more functional than the original space ever could.

The Original Master Bathroom in Pacific, MO: Dark, Dated, and Cramped
Like many homes built in the early 1990s, the original bathroom prioritized a large soaking tub over a functional shower. While that layout may have been trendy decades ago, it no longer matched the homeowners’ lifestyle or the overall scale of the home.
The existing shower was especially tight. Measuring only about four feet wide and roughly six feet tall, it felt cramped and closed in. Additionally, there was no recessed storage for shampoo or soap, and the aging shower door barely opened and closed properly anymore.
Meanwhile, the flooring and shower walls featured dated tile with oversized grout joints that had definitely seen better days. The 12” x 12” floor tile instantly dated the room, while the aging grout lines made the space feel even older.
The layout also created unnecessary visual barriers throughout the room.
The toilet sat inside a separate enclosed commode room, which may sound luxurious at first. However, the framed walls actually made the overall bathroom feel significantly smaller. Worse yet, the toilet compartment itself felt tight and cramped.
Lighting presented another major issue.
A single vanity light fixture centered over both sinks provided most of the illumination in the room. Beyond that, there was only one recessed can light over the tub and a basic ceiling-mounted fixture above the toilet area. The result? Shadows everywhere and a space that constantly felt dim and closed in.
Storage also fell short.
Although the vanity included two sinks, the cabinet layout wasted valuable space. Both sinks were squeezed onto a single wall with only one shared drawer stack between them. The recessed medicine cabinets on the side walls added very little practical storage and contributed to the dated appearance.
Simply put, the bathroom no longer matched the beauty and character of the home surrounding it.

The Goals for the Remodel
Right from the beginning, we all agreed on several key priorities.
First, the room needed to feel more open.
Second, the shower absolutely needed to grow.
Third, the tub had to go.
By removing the enclosed commode room and eliminating the oversized bathtub, we could dramatically improve both functionality and visual openness throughout the space.
Additionally, the homeowners wanted the finished bathroom to feel warm and inviting rather than cold or overly modern. They loved transitional styling with a soft luxury feel, so we focused heavily on warm wood tones, marble-inspired surfaces, matte black accents, and layered lighting.
Most importantly, they wanted a bathroom that actually worked for daily life.

Design Option One: Bigger Shower + Better Storage
The first design relocated the shower into the original tub location.
This immediately created a much larger shower while also opening opportunities for better vanity storage throughout the room.
Where the original shower once stood, we designed a smaller secondary vanity area. Meanwhile, the primary vanity location became home to a larger single-sink vanity paired with a tall linen cabinet for dramatically improved storage.
The result felt balanced, open, and highly functional.
Design Option Two: Dramatic Vanity Wall
The second concept took a completely different approach.
Instead of prioritizing the shower, this design focused on creating an oversized vanity wall stretching nearly the full length of the room.
To complement the longer vanity, we incorporated a dramatic transom-style window above the cabinetry, helping flood the room with natural light. Opposite the vanity, we designed an exceptionally large walk-in shower where the original vanity once stood.
Visually, this option looked stunning.
However, after reviewing both concepts together, the homeowners preferred the overall functionality of the first layout—with a few custom modifications, of course.
Plumbing Wizardry and Custom Design Solutions
Selecting the first layout required significant plumbing relocation behind the scenes.
Because the shower moved into the original tub location, several drain and water supply lines had to be relocated. Additionally, we already knew the existing window would need replacement since it would now become part of the actual shower enclosure.
To ensure safety and durability, we specified a tempered replacement window specifically designed for wet-area installation.
We also built a custom half wall between the shower and vanity area. However, instead of making it standard thickness, we intentionally designed it deeper so it could house recessed shampoo and soap storage inside the shower.
This small design decision added major functionality without cluttering the clean lines of the new space.
Warm Luxury Materials and Finishes
From the beginning, we knew tile would become one of the defining features of this bathroom remodel.
The homeowners selected large-format porcelain tile with a soft marble-inspired appearance that delivered all the elegance of natural stone without the maintenance concerns.
The tile extended floor-to-ceiling throughout the shower and eventually expanded beyond the original scope of work. In fact, once the installation started, the homeowners loved the look so much that they decided to continue the tile around the doorway and entry walls as well.
Meanwhile, the shower floor centered around a solid Onyx shower base.

For the plumbing fixtures, we selected a clean transitional-style shower system in matte black finish.
The system included:
- A pressure-balancing valve
- A diverter valve
- A rain shower head

To complete the shower enclosure, we installed custom heavy glass panels with a return panel instead of a traditional framed swinging shower door.

Storage played a huge role in the final design.
To maximize functionality, both vanity areas received custom recessed mirrored medicine cabinets with aluminum construction.

The Construction Timeline
Demolition for this bathroom remodel began on August 4 and the project wrapped up on October 27.
While some companies advertise lightning-fast remodeling timelines, we’ve learned that quality craftsmanship simply takes time.
Demolition alone took roughly one week because of the amount of tile removal and wall framing involved.
After demo, we reframed portions of the bathroom and created the recessed medicine cabinet openings along with the new shower half wall.
Once framing finished, the plumbing, electrical, and HVAC professionals began rough-in work. Due to the extensive plumbing relocation required for the new layout, mechanical work took approximately four additional days.
After inspections were completed, drywall installation began.
Hanging, taping, and sanding drywall throughout the bathroom took approximately one week before tile work could officially begin.
The Reality of Remodeling: Unexpected Challenges
Every remodeling project encounters surprises. This bathroom was no exception.
One of the most significant issues involved a failure within one of the shower valve joints.
Initially, everything passed pressure testing successfully after rough-in installation. However, over the weekend, a slow leak developed and eventually caused damage to the room beneath the bathroom.
Although frustrating, this situation highlights exactly why thorough testing and quality control matter so much during remodeling projects.
We replaced the valve assembly entirely and repaired the affected drywall below before moving forward.
Later in the project, we also discovered a cracked cabinet face frame during installation. The crack was extremely subtle and difficult to notice during initial inspection, but it became apparent once the cabinets were secured together.
Rather than compromise the finished project, we temporarily installed the cabinet for countertop templating purposes before replacing it entirely with a new cabinet.
Sometimes remodeling throws curveballs.
The important part is how those issues get handled.
Why Tile Installation Takes Longer Than Most People Expect

Once the tile floor installation finished, vanity cabinet installation began.

Once the quartz countertops arrived, the finish trades returned to complete:
- Plumbing fixture installation
- Sink hookups
- Electrical trim-out
- Lighting installation
- Final shower tile completion
At that point, the shower glass could finally be measured.
Because custom glass must fit perfectly to finished surfaces, measurement cannot occur until nearly everything else is complete. Glass fabrication then required another 7–10 business days before installation.
Finally, after the homeowners completed painting themselves, we returned to complete trim work, punch-list items, and final detailing.
The Final Result
Today, this once-dark and cramped 1990s bathroom feels completely transformed.
The room now feels dramatically larger, brighter, warmer, and more functional. The oversized shower creates a true spa-like experience, while the warm cabinetry and marble-look porcelain tile help the space feel timeless rather than trendy.
